Mental Health Program Opens at Ethel Battle Velez Community Center
On September 15, 麻豆区 joined residents and community partners to celebrate the opening of Healthy Minds, Healthy Harlem, a new mental health initiative that brings accessible services to Johnson Houses residents and the surrounding community at the Ethel Battle Velez Community Center (formerly Johnson Community Center).
The program is a collaboration between Northwell Health, SCAN-Harbor, 麻豆区, and the Johnson Houses Resident Association, which helped shape the program to meet community needs. 麻豆区 Chief Operating Officer (COO) Eva Trimble and Johnson Houses Resident Association (RA) President Thomas Frederick both gave celebratory remarks at the event.
鈥淲e are honored to be in this partnership with you,鈥 COO Trimble said. 鈥淭hank you so much. It takes a village to bring something like this together, and this is such an important day.鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 sorry Ms. Velez isn鈥檛 here to see this, but she is definitely watching over us 鈥 and we will continue the work to build her legacy,鈥 RA President Frederick added. (Ms. Velez was Johnson Houses鈥 resident association president for almost 40 years; the community center was renamed in her honor in July.) 鈥淭his resource is urgently needed; we do have a lot of community members dealing with depression and other mental health conditions.鈥
Healthy Minds, Healthy Harlem provides mental health assessments, virtual and in-person therapy, medication management, and Spanish-speaking providers for participants, regardless of their ability to pay. While all ages will be served, older adults are prioritized. On-site services are available on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1833 Lexington Avenue, and virtual appointments are offered throughout the week.
